Queensland Food Air Drop
Illawarra Mercury
Wednesday November 22, 2000
The Queensland Government will charter an aircraft to get food and other essential supplies to the town of Quilpie, which has been cut off by floodwaters for almost a week.
The road and rail link to the south-western cattle town has been cut by the flooded Warrego River, preventing attempts to bring in food.
Although the Warrego was expected to fall last night, flooding in the Bulloo River at Quilpie was expected to cut access to the town again today, Quilpie Shire Council chief executive officer Chris Stringer said.
``We have no real flooding problem in the town, it's just that the road has been cut," Mr Stringer said. He said some vehicles had been able to get out of Quilpie by circuitous back roads, but attempts to bring in food by the same route had failed.
